Music Monday and Battle of the Bands for 06.15.2020

It’s time once again for another Music Monday post! It’s freebie week over at Dolly’s, so my selection today is an older song that I haven’t heard in a while. But it popped up during a recent random shuffle (like so many of my freebie choices have here lately). It’s not one of their better known songs, but in my opinion, it is one of their best. And I love it, even if it’s sad. The lyrics may be sad and ring a bit too true at times, but I love the sound of it.

Velvet Revolver – “Fall To Pieces”

What are YOU listening to this week?

Now it’s time for the Battle of the Bands, a twice-monthly blog hop hosted by Stephen T. McCarthy. On the 1st and 15th of each month, participating bloggers choose two covers of the same song and pit them against one another in a “battle”, and their readers choose the winner by listening to both versions and voting for their favorite in the comments. Some bloggers only participate on either the 1st or the 15th. I participate both times, most of the time. On the 7th and the 21st, the votes are tallied and a winner announced in a separate post.

I actually had both Saturday and Sunday off this weekend, which made it a very productive AND relaxing weekend for me. I managed to get a lot done, and polish it off with an ice cold beer. Why don’t y’all have a virtual beer with me? For this mid-month Battle, I have chosen two songs which are not covers, but in which the theme is beer. Perfect for an almost summer weekend, don’t you think?

First up is

ZZ Top – “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers”

Next is

Kenny Chesney – “Beer in Mexico”

Take a listen to both videos (but try not to be influenced by the video itself), decide which one you like better, and cast your vote in the comments. I’ll be back on the 21st to total the votes and declare the winner.

Now…are YOU gonna raise hell with ZZ Top or have a beer in Mexico with Kenny?

Thank you for voting! I’ll get the scoreboard started.

      ZZ Top – 1
      Kenny Chesney – 0

I think you, Mike, and I are the only ones doing battles this time around. At least that gives us plenty of time to really spend on the songs, though.

  1. Arlee Bird says:

Gosh, I almost forgot that this is a BOTB day since I’m sitting this one out. I like both songs okay, but ZZ Top makes me want to get more rowdy than Kenny does. I vote for ZZ.

    • Kim says:

Thanks for coming by to vote! I think there are only three of us participating this time around. I’ll get the score card updated!

      ZZ Top – 2
      Kenny Chesney – 0

  2. XmasDolly says:

I never heard your first one, but who doesn’t know ZZ Top, love them & that’s who I vote for. Kenney Chesney is okay, but I really don’t care for him sorry. ZZ Top all the way! Luv them!!! THEY ROCK! Have a great week! Stay healthy, stay safe, careful with your choices. HUGS

    • Kim says:

Yay, Kenny gets one finally! I was worried this was going to be a total shutout. An actual beer in Mexico would be awesome right about now…

      ZZ Top – 4
      Kenny Chesney – 1

  3. Kim,

Where’s the rootbeer? I’d like a tall icy mug of A&W please! Maybe, even a rootbeer float. Mmm, that sounds tasty, doesn’t it? Okay, alright now onward to your battle songs. I’m gonna have a H-E- double toothpicks time drinking rootbeer with ZZ Top in this showdown! Don’t tell home town boy, Kenny, that I voted against him. 🙂 Thanks for joining the 4M crew on the dance floor.

    • Kim says:

We’ll make yours a root beer, Cathy. A float, even. That sounds sooooo good right now! I’ll get your vote added. Your secret is safe with me!

      ZZ Top – 5
      Kenny Chesney – 1

  4. Stephen T. McCarthy says:

    Great BOTB theme, KIM!

I can’t believe I never thought of doing a Boozy-BOTB before! (‘There’s A Tear In My Beer’.) I’ll have to fix that before too long. Maybe I’ll make mine whiskey.

Don’t tell anyone, as it’d be bad for my hard-drinkin’ reputation, but right now, I’m only sipping V8 juice. (It’d be better as a Bloody Mary, methinks.)

Well, this Battle is tough because both songs are good and get the point across, but ZZ’s tune iz juzt so famous. Plus, in my youth, I did indeed drink a lot of beer and raise a lot of hell. But I never went to Mexico to drink beer. I went to Mexico to drink Margaritas — and to see if the jail in Ensenada really lived down to its reputation. (It did.)

I wish I could use my vote to help try to balance out the tally a bit, but… I’d be lying if I said I like beer in Mexico as much as I like raising hell in Texas.

    Gotta go with ZZee BOYS!

Kim I’m not sure if you’ve been there yet, but Cathy Kennedy also has a BOTB installment running right now. I think that makes four o’ ya in this round.

    • Kim says:

I think we all hit a point where we have to (at least periodically) lay off our libations of choice! I drink a lot of orange juice myself, but I don’t think I could do V8. I absolutely hate tomatoes! But I know V8 is good for you.

I did not know that Cathy had one up (I didn’t see it when I went over to check on Monday’s Music Moves Me); I will head over there and see who she has in her ring! As for mine, I’ll update the score with your vote.

      ZZ Top – 7
      Kenny Chesney – 1

  5. ZZ Top, definitely, by a mile. Strangely, I’ve hardly drank during the pandemic, a time when people were craving drinks (well, many people). Someone I knew drank with her friends on Zoom every Friday night! But seriously, I had several Velvet Revolver songs I liked but I had honestly forgotten all about them.

    • Kim says:

Daaaaaang, guess I’ll give ZZ Top another point – but just so there’s an actual score. They’ve already blown this battle out of the water. I like your friend’s idea of drinking with friends on Zoom! Most of my state is somewhat opened back up (including bars), but I never get out to drink or socialize much, and not at all after the pandemic. But I don’t have to social distance on my back porch!

I am the same way with the Velvet Revolver songs. I like a lot of them. Like them a lot. But for some reason, just don’t play them all that regularly.

      ZZ Top – 9
      Kenny Chesney – 1

  6. Mike says:

I like ZZ Top, seen them a few times through the years. As far as songs go I like Kenny’s Beer in Mexico better so that is my vote. I think ZZ Top is going to win.

    • Kim says:

You are lucky! I always wanted to see them live. They would always sell out their shows at the Mid South Coliseum way before I had any hope of getting tickets (I was a teenager back then), and they would add more dates, which would also inevitably sell out. I really like them a lot. There’s a lot to be said for Kenny’s song, though, so I’m glad it’s getting just a little bit of love!

      ZZ Top – 9
      Kenny Chesney – 2

    • Kim says:

Probably is a long shot, but I’m still glad he’s getting more votes. For me, it’s a mood. I love both songs, but like one or the other better at different times depending completely on my mood. Thanks for coming by to vote!

      ZZ Top – 9
      Kenny Chesney – 3
