(NaBloPoMo Day 6)
November is National Native American Heritage Month, so the theme for this week’s Monday’s Music Moves Me is “Songs inspired by, performed by, or about Native Americans.”
Three songs about Native Americans; one quite well-known, one not as well-known (but my favorite of the three, as it’s by one of my favorite bands!), and one by a hair band who had a day in the sun in the late eighties, but has since been mostly tragically forgotten until the movie Hot Rod featured several of their songs in its soundtrack and musicians such as MATT and KIM, Laibach, and Chamillionaire sampled their songs:
Iron Maiden – “Run To The Hills”
The Cult – “American Horse”
Europe – “Cherokee”
And a song by a Native American – sort of. I’m foregoing Redbone and others here and choosing instead a song by Ozzy Osbourne in which Randy Castillo (Apache) had a part in writing and, of course, performing:
Ozzy Osbourne – “Crazy Babies”
Who are some of YOUR favorite Native American musicians and performers? Let’s see them in the comments!
Kim,
I’m having issues with some WP sites and I suspect yours might be one of them, so I’m using my Twitter account to comment. The only Indian band I knew about for years was Redbone with their one-hit wonder “Indian Reservation”, so it was great fun to dig and learn with this week’s theme. You added some new mewsic and history to my knowledge base. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with the 4M crew, my dear. Have a boogietastic week! 😉
I am sorry to hear about that, Cathy. I will email you, if that’s okay, to find out more about the problem specifically. I hate when the site glitches, because I never can tell what’s wrong to fix it!
Hey Kim, I made a goof on my comment when I mentioned Redbone and the song, ‘Indian Reservation’. I had my brain wires mixed up. smack forehead Redbone’s ‘Come and Get Your Love’ was a favorite one-hit of mine. Of course I liked Paul Revere and The Raiders ‘Indian Reservation’ which is also a one-hit wonder. 🙂
I knew what you meant! I had never heard the “Indian Reservation” song, but had heard the Redbone one. I figured they were the most famous Native American band, and would get plenty of attention!
Great choices. I didn’t know Ozzy was part Native American.
Ozzy is not, but his former drummer Randy Castillo, who I mentioned in the post, was Apache. I will edit to make it more understandable. Thank you!
It’s amazing the number of musicians that have Native roots. Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix, Kitty Wells…
I know; I had NO IDEA there were so many. I knew about Randy Castillo, of course, but there are so, so many other musicians AND entertainers with Native American roots.
Headbangers come from Native roots too! You proved it. Thanks for playing along this week.
They absolutely do – and he’s not even the only one. Thank you for stopping by!
Okay, well, I see many are using I believe they call it hard rock, but what do I know being as I’m more from the 70’s thru 90’s era… So, I totally agree with John here, but I had to look mine up. I agree many have the Native roots, but many do not know what they mean, but I see you looked yours up too. That’s good to do your homework though. ROCK ON, my friend!!!
I don’t know how well I did my homework, but I always knew about Randy Castillo’s Native American roots. I suspect he was more involved with his culture than some of the other musicians who are descended from Native American tribes, but I don’t know for sure.
This was very interesting. Redbone was the only band I could think of as well.
